When Bianca and Daniel finally reached the river and were happily splashing in the cold water, they heard Peanut's angry bark and saw an old woman coming up to the riverbank with a basket in her hand.

When the woman reached the riverbank, she took a tiny, mewling kitten out of her basket and tossed it into the river as far from the bank as she could. The kitten fluttered in the air, crying desperately, then dove into the water.
