Upon his arrival in Vietnam, Lieutenant Paul Clement Pritchard found himself assigned to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam's Four Corps as a military Advisor. From Four Corps, he was recruited into the Phoenix Program, which was designed to neutralize, capture, interrogate, and kill influential Viet Cong operatives. He saw violations of the Geneva Convention on both sides and watched as the military slowly ceded the Phoenix Program to government agencies. Author Biography

Decorated Vietnam veteran Paul Clement Pritchard is "one of the nation's most influential conservationists." His impact has helped create over half of America's national parks, the first US estuarine and marine sanctuaries, and state heritage programs. Pritchard founded the National Park Trust and served as president of the National Parks and Conservation Association from 1980 to 1997. He was the founding chair of the Climate Institute and created the March for Parks, the world's largest annual Earth Day event. As a decorated career officer in the US Department of the Interior, he chaired a presidential task force and was a driving force behind the creation of Alaska national park units. For his contributions to conservation, Pritchard has received the Secretary of the Interior's Honor Award for Meritorious Service, the Gulf Conservation Award, and the first Albert Schweitzer Prize in the Humanities. He is married and has four grown children.
