Author Biography

A Teacher With a Microphone: Former Miss Hawai'i/Miss America Uses the Crown to Amplify Her Voice From the first Asian-American (and the first teacher) to become Miss America, to host of a multiple Telly award-winning TV show, director of a youth choir, author, keynote and motivational speaker, Presidential appointee, and so much more.... meet Angela Perez Baraquio. A Magna Cum Laude graduate of Moanalua High School in Honolulu, Hawai'i who holds a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, Angela's passion is education in all its forms. She is an animated speaker who incorporates her teaching methods into her presentations and workshops; engaging, inspiring, and touching the hearts of her audiences in the process. Whether providing the keynote address to the National Press Club or speaking privately to a young teen, Angela's goal is to inspire and educate - often by sharing her own story. Achieving the coveted title of Miss America 2001 was the American dream realized for Baraquio, the eighth-born of ten children and daughter of immigrant parents from the Philippines. Prior to being crowned Miss Hawai'i 2000, she'd twice competed at local and state preliminary pageants. Hosting her own television series and co-hosting the national Miss America 2002 telecast with Tony Danza, Angela has also appeared on national shows ranging from Hollywood Squares to Good Morning America, Regis and Letterman. She modeled in the Super Bowl's Gridiron Glamour Celebrity Fashion Show and was invited with her husband to a State Dinner at the White House honoring the Philippine President. She also appeared on The 700 Club to share the story of her beloved brother's suicide, and how she and her family were able to move through their incredible pain and sorrow and find hope amidst the tragedy.
