Es la unica novela que escribio Marti publicada por entregas el ano 1885, en el periodico El Latino Americano, que se editaba en Nueva York. En esta obra introdujo los rasgos que caracterizarian a la novela modernista. Gonzalo de Quesada, su discipulo predilecto y albacea, la encontro en unas paginas sueltas del archivo martiano. Este hallazgo hizo posible que la novela no se perdiese, pues Marti la habia firmado con el seudonimo de Adelaida Ral.
