Aristotle proposed catharsis, an emotional cleansing--or, in later interpretations, a sense of equilibrium--as tragedy's outcome, and Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan, grand theorists of the forces of anti-mastery in human and nonhuman existence, surprisingly agreed.
