The book examines variables attached to living with these conditions, including culture, spirituality and sexual abuse and how people have integrated these experiences into their lives. As well, people who have been either successful in their fields (arts, education) including actors Rick Green and Henry Winkler, or who have had notable achievements in various sectors (Ron Davis of the Davis Dyslexia Method, psychiatrist Gabor Mate) are profiled.
Carter Hammett is a social worker, writer and trainer who spent his childhood between Ottawa and Prince Albert SK. He graduated from Cape Breton University with a Bachelor of Community Studies degree and holds diplomas in social work, adult education and journalism. His words and pictures have appeared in The Toronto Sun, The National Post, The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Citizen, Abilities Magazine, Convenience and Carwash Canada and Auto and Trucking Atlantic. He is the author of two previous books, including the well-received Benchmarking: A Guide to Hiring and Managing Persons with Learning Disabilities (ALDER, 2005). He currently lives in Toronto.
