McCarthy is known for his gestural and intuitive artwork. McCarthy who worked on fishing boats near Catalina Island and cites the Pacific Ocean as a lasting influence on his work. His previously published monographs include Dan McCarthy in 2007, Facepots in 2015, and Skateboarders in 2018. Writer Robert Sullivan is the author of Rats, The Meadowlands, A Whale Hunt, and My American Revolution. His writing has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, A Public Space, and Vogue. He is the recipient of a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship.
