Raised on a kibbutz in Israel, Maya Kidron suffers from the constraints of its rigid ideology. At the age of twenty-one she leaves for the United States to start a new life away from the kibbutz. When an invitation to her mother's birthday arrives in the mail, she finds herself returning home reluctantly. Back at the kibbutz, she reunites with her family and discovers that she was not the only one who had suffered.
