"First History of Sacramento City" by Dr. John F. Morse was first published in 1853 in Colville's Sacramento City Directory and reissued by the Sacramento Book Collectors Club in 1945, with an historical note on Dr. Morse's life by Caroline El. Wenzel. It was the third book published by the club. This is a commemorative edition of the original book with a new introduction by Lawrence Fox, a profile of Caroline Wenzel by Gary Kurutz and comments about being a doctor during "Gold Rush" California by Dr. Bob LaPerriere. Since 1945, the club has issued 22 books and more than 700 keepsakes. Most are in the permanent collections of the UC Davis and California State University Sacramento Libraries, the California State Library, UC Davis, and the Sacramento Public Library

Author Biography

Dr. Morse was one of the Sacramento's pioneer settlers and first citizens. Though a medical man by profession, there were few movements of the day which did not claim his attention and add to his reputation. Urged on by a driving energy and enthusiasm, he first tried the mines, then became editor and publisher, politician and public servant, lecturer and professor; he was banker, auctioneer, real estate agent, and promoter. Qualified both as eye-witness and performer, he could write with authority, and his History has long been an acknowledged source book on the era of the gold rush.
