Herami is a young orphan studying to become a warlock at Wānanga mo te Waiako, a university of magick. He struggles to find his place in the world of magick, while at home in his orphanage he is shunned for being different.

Everything changes when the dark boats of a foreign army come buzzing into shore, seeking to claim a precious resource that could control them all. Herami and his companions must choose between staying to fight and help their families, or fleeing to get help from the Arikitotoa - the Storm Chief. He is far to the north across a desert, frozen mountain ranges, forests of man-eating plants and finally a wide strait separating the two islands. The fate of Aotaonga rests in these young warlocks' hands.

Aotaonga, the setting for this story, is a fictional land inspired by the geography of Aotearoa, New Zealand.
