It provided sixty-five thousand soldiers to the Confederacy and about half that many to the Union, including nearly twenty-four thousand African Americans, some of whom formed the first sanctioned black regiment in the U.S. Army. Many prominent participants of the war hailed from Louisiana. The state also was the scene of approximately six hundred battles and skirmishes. Among them were some of the war's most crucial engagements that secured the Mississippi River for the Union.

Terry L. Jones was born in Newton, Mississippi, and he grew up in Winn Parish, Louisiana. He received a BA in social studies education and an MA in American history from Louisiana Tech University, going on to earn a PhD from Texas A&M University, where he specialized in the American Civil War.
He has more than thirty years' experience teaching in Louisiana, and he also worked for several years with the Louisiana Office of State Parks as manager of the Fort Saint Jean Baptiste State Commemorative Area.
A professor of history at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, he has published seven books on Louisiana and Civil War history. In addition, he is an award-winning outdoor writer and a member of the Louisiana Outdoor Writers Association and the Southeastern Outdoor Press Association.
Jones has been married to Carol June Janette for thirty-eight years and has two daughters, Laura and Amie.
