She first went to China in 1948 to work for the Information Department of the British Embassy in Shanghai, then moved to Nanjing, and in 1950 to Beijing to help open the Embassy there when that city became the capital of China. After her marriage, she studied Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London University. She returned with her husband to Beijing and lived there from 1953 to 1955, then from 1959 to 1961, and again from 1974 to 1978 when her husband was appointed the British Ambassador there. She lived in Hong Kong from 1982 to 1986 while her husband was the Governor of Hong Kong. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eLo King-man, a versatile artist, designer, and producer for the theatre.
