A native of Washington State, Tom Westman earned a PhD in chemistry from the University of California. He served on the chemistry faculties of the University of Illinois-Urbana and the University of Florida before entering into seventeen successful years in corporate America. As his two sons approached adulthood, he returned to Washington State and joined the faculty of the University of Washington. Despite his success, he always felt a lack of personal fulfillment. An unexpected career change led him to join the backcountry rangers on Mount Rainier. He spent the next ten years working for the National Park Service and found a sense of himself he'd never before experienced.
