He currently lives outside of Madison, Wisconsin with his long time companion Irene and two Shiba Inu dogs, Toshiro and Yojimbo, named respectively after a samurai actor and one of that actor's more famous roles. When not walking dogs, he enjoys reading, making craftsman furniture and playing the guitar and mandolin. His latest musical project is learning the playing style of gypsy jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt.
