After graduating from Joshibi University of Art and Design (with an emphasis in Japanese painting), she received a graduate degree in fine arts from Tokyo University of the Arts. Following this, she worked as a research assistant in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Tokyo, and she obtained a doctorate in medicine from Toho University School of Medicine. She lectures at universities and colleges throughout Japan.
