by W. M. Bernstein (Author)

Sophistication has been recognized as a finalist "Best Book" by the New Mexico-Arizona Book Co-Op for 2016 The book brings together serious neuroscience and seriously deadpan humor, resulting in an opus that can best be described as Sigmund Freud meets Dave Barry meets Malcom Gladwell-esque amateur science-minus the amateur part.

Sophistication suggests how readers can become more competent thinkers, able to interpret complex issues and make better decisions in all aspects of life.

Bernstein breaks humanity down into four mind states or personality types: shmo, schmuck, schadenfreudist, and sophisticate. The goal, for anyone hoping to get ahead in life, is to become a sophisticate-and learning how is a real trip

The book lampoons everything from the self-help genre itself (Dale Carnegie's famous advice boils down to influencing people by using their name a lot, being friendly, and wearing a hat) to Major League Baseball (it's an orthodox religion) to Vladimir Putin (Stalin without the furry hat). Sophistication offers keen insights into the biological, psychological, and sociological causes of behavior that could help you achieve success-or not.

Either way, this book takes you on a fascinating foray into the inner workings of the human mind.

Author Biography

W. M. Bernstein is a noted scientist trained in biology, social and organizational psychology, psychoanalysis, and psychopharmacology. He worked as a management consultant in the United States, United Kingdom, and Europe until 2001. Currently, he works in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a medical psychologist and neuroscience writer. His recent books are A Basic Theory of Neuropsychoanalysis (2011) and The Realisation of Concepts: Infinity, Cognition, and Health (2014).

This book grew from irritation with changes in everyday habits of thinking and speaking that developed at the end of the Cold War in 1989. People began shrieking "Oh my God!" upon the most minor happenings. Instead of saying "Your Welcome" after being thanked, now everyone replies, "No, Thank You!" What the hell happened? Sophistication tries to answer these questions and others using science, commonsense, and an arch sense of humor.
