by R. H. Malden (Author), Roger Pater (Author)

Two shorter collections of the ghostly and weird gathered together for good value

Whilst some writers of supernatural stories have created large (sometimes massive) numbers of tales, it is also the case that some authors have merely 'dabbled' and their own canon of ghostly fiction is therefore quite small. This consideration, however, does not imply that the quality of their stories was sub-standard. The two complete works included in this special Leonaur edition are both worthy examples. Richard Henry Malden was born in 1879, in East Anglia, the grandson of Sir Richard Mayne- one of the first commissioners of the Metropolitan Police. He was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. Electing a career in the church, he became the Dean of Wells Cathedral. Indeed, he wrote extensively on historical and religious matters. However, what (fortunately) motivated him to write this small collection of ghostly tales was his abiding friendship with the doyen of the literary supernatural short story, M.R. James. 'Nine Ghost Stories', is the fruit of that association. Roger Pater also had strong ecclesiastical connections because he was, in reality, a Benedictine, Dom Gilbert Roger Hudleston. His fictional sensitive character, Fr. Philip Rivers Pater, is a Roman Catholic priest who can 'hear' disembodied voices-explanations of the past and prophesies of things yet to come, sometimes spoken by those who have passed beyond veil. He tells his stories in, 'Mystic Voices' to his cousin, 'Roger Pater', a journalist.

Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.
