Few military units attract the attention of Hollywood and novelists as does the Foreign Legion. Those old enough will remember Buster Crabbe as Captain Gallant in the 1950s television serial about the swashbuckling Legionnaires. David Wooster King was a student at Harvard from 1912 to 1914, before enlisting in the French Foreign Legion. He joined the French Army, and was made 1st lieutenant in the U.S. 1917. His original title for the book "Ten Thousand Shall Fall" was "L.M.8046: An Intimate Story of the French Foreign Legion". Dr. Paul Rich is a life member of the French Colonial History Society as well as the Popular and American Culture Associations, and of the Tangier American Legation Society, which maintains the old American consulate in Tangiers.
