Just prior to the American Revolution a twelve year old Shawnee Indian boy and his best friend lie on the bank of the Muskingum River telling stories about The Little People and horse-headed snakes to scare their younger brothers. It is long after midnight but before the night is over his brother and his nephew will be knocked into the raging River, setting in motion a series of events that may end in the starvation of the people at Wapatomica.

Author Biography

Enrolled in Cherokee Nation, Sherrin Watkins has practiced law in tribal courts, served on the Loyal Shawnee Business Committee, been a judge on the Sac and Fox Supreme Court, and worked for both Muscogee (Creek) Nation and Pawnee Nation. Her childrens' picture books include White Bead Ceremony about a Shawnee girl getting a Shawnee name, and Green Snake Ceremony, recipient of the Gamma State Author's Award for Ms. Watkins and recipient of the Oklahoma Book Award for illustrator Kim Doner.
