Vengeful ghosts, sea monsters, and America's most haunted lighthouse figure prominently in this collection of eerie in tales from the Old Line State. From the rugged Appalachian Mountains, to the metropolitan center of Baltimore, to the Atlantic Coast come a variety of stories and legends, including Dorchester County's Suicide Bridge, Fort McHenry's gruesome hanging ghosts, and a sea captain's widow whose sad wailing can still be heard coming from her final resting place in the family graveyard.

Back Jacket

Reading line: Eerie tales and spine-tingling stories from the Old Line State Things that go bump in the night, disembodied voices, footsteps in an empty stairwell, an icy hand on your shoulder...let your imagination run wild as you read about Maryland's most extraordinary apparitions, sinister spooks, and bizarre beasts. You may know of Dorchester County's Suicide Bridge or Fort McHenry's gruesome hanging ghosts, but perhaps you haven't heard about: -Point Lookout Light, where the deaths of thousands of Confederate prisoners and countless other misfortunes have earned it the title of America's most haunted lighthouse; -Gravity Hill, where you can park your car, put it into neutral, and then watch it move "uphill" aided by some unseen force; -the tale of a long-lost treasure chest of gold and jewels stolen from European royalty that is reportedly buried somewhere west of Frederick; and -a sea captain's widow whose sad wailing can still be heard coming from her final resting place in the family graveyard at Pentland Hills. Ed Okonowicz has written more than twenty books on Mid-Atlantic culture, oral history, folklore, and ghost stories--including The Big Book of Maryland Ghost Stories. He is retired from the University of Delaware, where he worked as an editor and writer. He offers several popular presentations featuring history, haunts and humor.
