In 1968 he fled his country to Germany and moved to the United States two years later. In his rich chess career, he won dozens of brilliancy prizes for his games. His most notable tournament victories included three US Championships and the IBM Tournament in Amsterdam in 1968. He was the chess columnist for The Washington Post and The Huffington Post.
