Mercedes-Benz SLK/SLC R172: 2026 Edition
History, Technology & 25-page Buyer's Guide
Updated to include the SLC models introduced in 2016, including the SLC43 AMG and Final Edition.
Produced from 2011 to 2020, the Mercedes-Benz SLK/SLC R172 was the third and final generation of the compact Mercedes-Benz roadster with a retractable vario-roof. Inspired by the larger SL and the SLS AMG, it combined elegant design with modern technology, high everyday usability, and a wide range of engines. Features such as MAGIC SKY CONTROL and AIRSCARF added to its distinctive character. A major strength of this extensively updated 220-page book is its detailed 25-page buyer's guide. It explains what prospective owners should look for when assessing a used SLK or SLC R172, including engines, gearboxes, vario-roof operation, electronics, suspension, possible rust spots, and other typical problem areas. The guide helps readers identify well-maintained cars, recognize warning signs, and avoid potentially costly mistakes.
The book also explores the complete history of the R172, from the early SLK models introduced in 2011 to the facelifted SLC range launched in 2016. It covers the full model spectrum, including the economical four-cylinder versions, the 250 CDI diesel, the V6 models, the naturally aspirated SLK55 AMG V8, and the later SLC43 AMG. Key topics covered in this book:
- 25-page buyer's guide: Important inspection points, typical weaknesses, and potential cost traps
- From SLK to SLC: The development of the R172 and the 2016 facelift
- Vario-roof troubleshooting: Common problems, possible causes, and practical inspection advice
- Engines and gearboxes: Four-cylinder models, V6 variants, the 250 CDI diesel, SLK55 AMG, and SLC43 AMG
- AMG models: The contrasting characters of the naturally aspirated SLK55 AMG V8 and the later SLC43 AMG
- Equipment and options: Important packages, factory options, and equipment codes
- COMAND infotainment: Features, navigation systems, and important updates
- Special editions: Edition 1, RedArt Edition, Final Edition, and other notable variants
- Brabus, Carlsson, and RENNtech: Selected tuner conversions and performance upgrades
- VIN and data card: How to verify factory specifications and original equipment
- Technical reference: Production figures, performance data, and power and torque curves
Numerous current photographs illustrate design details, technical features, interiors, and individual variants of the R172.
Whether you already own an SLK or SLC, are considering the purchase of a used example, or simply appreciate compact Mercedes-Benz roadsters, this book combines model history, technical detail, and practical buying advice.
The R172 marked the end of a distinctive chapter in Mercedes-Benz history: a compact roadster that combined everyday usability with the pleasure of opening the roof at the touch of a button.
