It was originally published by Gallimard Press in France in 1958.The story of Ramza is the story of many Oriental women, a story of life in the harem at the turn of the century, of life behind the veil, and of one woman's rebellion. Out el Kouloub wrote it as a novel, yet it reads like a personal account.
Out El Kouloub (1899-1968) fled Cairo in the early 1960s after Nasser came to power. She is the author of five books including Ramza and Zanouba.
