Author Biography

My view of the 'other side' has percolated through many years. As a very young member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, I served in 1954-56 with the NATO forces in Germany. There I made several German friends, among them Frau Lucie Rommel, widow of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, famous as The Desert Fox. During three visits to her home in Stuttgart we spent many hours over Kuchen und Kaffee discussing the war from our opposite sides, the problems of German civilians on the 'home front', as well as the enormous difficulties her husband had confronted as a soldier at the highest level. The Schellendorf series of four historical novels came out of that tiny germ of experience, and has the advantage of first-hand memory. I am proud to have been befriended by a courageous heart and a gracious woman who told me all the truth.
