Author Biography

Patricia L. Mervine is a speech/language pathologist with 20 years' experience in helping children who have communication disorders. She has written three children's books about various aspects of speech therapy. "How Katie Got a Voice (and a cool new nickname)" is about a fourth grade girl who has significant disabilities and cannot speak. Her classmates don't know how to interact with her until she gets an augmentative communication device that becomes her voice. This story concludes with lessons in disability etiquette. Use this book to increase awareness, understanding, and acceptance of students who are differently abled, especially in inclusion settings. This book is also available in German. "The Mouth With a Mind of Its Own" is the story of a kindergarten-age boy who can't make his mouth say words clearly. He is isolated and frustrated, until the speech therapist helps him "tame is wild mouth." The story is useful in explaining the stages of articulation therapy.
