Little Dorothy spent her whole short life in the country, and as she was the only kid on the farm, she was free to go about the meadows and woodlands at her leisure. The animals also adored Dorothy since it was well known among them that she could be relied upon not to hurt them. Because when the horse and the cow-both of whom Dorothy often stroked-met in the turnip patch, the horse told the cow about her generosity, and the cow told the dog, and the dog informed the cat, and the cat told her black kitten, and the black kitten told the rabbit.
