Union County, New Jersey played an important role in America's War for Independence from the British. Hannah Caldwell, from Union County, is believed to be the first civilian woman killed by the British during the War and her tragic story became a rallying point for the Patriots. Union County was the site of the last major battle in the northern states. After the Battle of Springfield, the British left New Jersey and the North. Union County was home to signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, and the President of the Continental Congress who authorized the Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War.
